Patreon Partners with Cloudflare to Block AI Crawlers

The creator support platform Patreon announced on July 9 a partnership with internet infrastructure company Cloudflare. According to a report by 404 Media, this collaboration immediately implemented a system that blocks access to all posts on Patreon at the network level by AI crawlers used for training purposes.

Jack Conte, Patreon’s founder and CEO, shared the following on his Instagram account:

Patreon has partnered with Cloudflare, an internet infrastructure company, to block AI training crawlers from using the work you publish on Patreon for AI model training. This measure is being implemented immediately at the network level for all posts.

Conte further emphasized the importance of creators’ rights:

Creators deserve credit, compensation, and consent. If these are not provided, crawlers have no place on Patreon. The free internet is alive, and the rebellion has already begun.

Cloudflare’s Enhanced Crawler Controls

In 2025, Cloudflare announced its policy to block AI crawlers from accessing website content without the operator’s consent or compensation by default. Additionally, in early July 2026, Cloudflare introduced new options enabling website operators to manage AI traffic. These options classify bots into categories like search crawlers, agent crawlers, and training crawlers, allowing operators to set permissions or blocks individually for each category.

According to Cloudflare’s official blog, from September 2026, all newly onboarded domains on Cloudflare will have default settings that block training and agent crawlers from pages displaying ads, while only search crawlers will be permitted by default.

The partnership with Patreon leverages these Cloudflare measures across the entire platform. This ensures that all posts published on Patreon are protected at the network level by Cloudflare.

Efforts to Protect Creators

In May 2025, Conte released a 43-minute video criticizing the AI industry’s failure to adequately compensate creators. In the video, he argued that creators should be granted “consent, credit, and compensation,” pointing out that none of these are currently being fulfilled.

However, Patreon does not enforce a blanket ban on AI-generated works. As long as users comply with the platform’s guidelines, AI-generated content is allowed. In 2024, following reports by 404 Media about creators using Patreon to monetize non-consensual sexual images and videos, the platform updated its guidelines concerning AI content.

The current guidelines specify, “Depictions of individuals generated by AI in illustration or animation form are permitted. Hyper-realistic AI-generated depictions of individuals are only allowed if the individual is real and explicit documented consent has been obtained.”

Impact on the Industry

Patreon’s latest move is expected to accelerate discussions around the use of AI training data within the creator economy. As Conte’s firm tone suggests, this proactive approach to protecting creators’ rights could influence other platforms as well.

According to a report by 404 Media’s Samantha Cole, neither Patreon nor Cloudflare immediately responded to requests for comment. However, it is clear that this partnership has already been implemented, raising the question of whether other platforms will adopt similar measures.

In the short term, Patreon’s move is likely to garner positive feedback from the creator community and serve as a differentiator for the platform. At the same time, Cloudflare’s crawler control features may gain wider adoption, potentially reshaping the methods used to collect AI training data.
