Pixel 11: Is 16GB of RAM Overkill? Concerns Over Rising Costs

Concerns are mounting over the potential price hike accompanying increased RAM in Google’s upcoming flagship, the Pixel 11 series. In a column dated July 27, Android Police’s Jade Bryan Jardinico urges Google to prioritize affordability over boosting RAM to 16GB. The rising cost of memory due to demand from AI processing is making its impact felt across the smartphone industry.

Samsung’s latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, were priced significantly higher than their predecessors. Android Police attributes this to the rising cost of memory. Jardinico warns that Google could face a similar scenario.

“If Google truly values its fans, it should avoid raising prices this year, even if that means limiting specs, particularly RAM,” Jardinico said. The journalist expressed a preference for a reasonable price point for the Pixel 11, even at the expense of some raw processing speed.

Google’s Efficient RAM Strategy vs. AI Demands

Google has demonstrated that it can deliver a fast and smooth Android experience without requiring massive RAM, thanks to its custom Tensor chipset and system-level optimizations. Jardinico recalls, “The Pixel 8 series performed excellently with 8GB to 12GB of RAM, holding its own against competitors like the OnePlus 13, which had 24GB.”

However, the situation is evolving. Starting with the Pixel 9 Pro, Google began increasing RAM, a trend that continued with the Pixel 10 Pro. This shift reflects the company’s focus on enabling faster execution of new AI and machine learning features. While Google is working on optimizing AI processing—such as with its new Gemini chip, Frozen v2—the need for more memory on devices continues to grow.

Jardinico warns, “The memory crisis is pushing prices out of control across all major brands, and Google is no exception.” The journalist suggests that Google consider either refraining from equipping the Pixel 11 with 16GB of RAM or keeping the base model’s memory lower to avoid price hikes.

“Google has shown that not every Pixel needs top-tier chipsets or maximum RAM. The standard models of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 featured 12GB RAM, while the A-series employed even less, yet they remained reliable,” Jardinico points out.

The argument reflects consumer concerns over the trade-off between enhanced AI capabilities requiring more memory and the rising costs that come with it. With memory prices continuing to climb, manufacturers are at a crossroads, needing to reevaluate the balance between “sufficient performance” and “affordable pricing.”
