Google’s Vice President of Devices and Services, Shakil Barkat, effectively admitted in an interview with 9to5 Google that the next-generation Pixel smartphone, the Pixel 11, will be priced higher than the current Pixel 10. According to a report by Terrence O’Brien of The Verge, a prolonged RAM supply issue—caused by the explosive growth of AI data centers—has driven up memory prices. Companies like Apple, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Roku have already raised prices in response, and Google appears to be following suit.

The “RAMageddon” Behind the Price Increase

Barkat stated, “We have shielded consumers from fluctuations in purchasing power for as long as we could,” adding, “However, the economic environment has fundamentally changed, and it is no longer possible to avoid the impact.” He further explained that the entire Pixel lineup would undergo a price “adjustment” that would dynamically reflect supply realities.

AI data centers require vast amounts of memory bandwidth and capacity for both training and inference. This has not only caused shortages of GPUs but also led to skyrocketing demand for HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and server-grade DRAM, driving up procurement costs for consumer products like smartphones. This situation, dubbed “RAMageddon” by industry insiders, has forced multiple companies to pass on the added costs to customers.

Rumored Pixel 11 Pricing and Specs

According to current reports, the base model of the Pixel 11 is expected to cost $899 (approximately ¥140,000). However, due to exchange rates and tax structures, pricing may vary in the Japanese market. On the upside, internal storage is rumored to increase from 128GB to 256GB, offering more capacity alongside the price hike. Conversely, the Pixel 11 Pro may see a reduction in RAM from 16GB to 12GB, suggesting an effort to optimize costs amid rising memory prices.

Google plans to unveil its next-generation Pixel devices on August 12, 2026, when details about pricing and specifications will be officially announced. Barkat’s comments suggest that the company has absorbed as much of the price volatility as possible but has now reached its limit.

Historically, smartphone manufacturers have absorbed changes in component costs, but in recent years, the trend of passing these costs on to consumers has accelerated.
