According to a report by The Verge, Comcast has launched a same-day delivery service for routers under its Xfinity internet service brand. This new service allows new subscribers to receive their routers on the same day they sign up. The service is currently available in about 20 markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Nashville, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

Two Options: Delivery and In-Store Pickup

New Xfinity customers can select the same-day delivery option during the checkout process when signing up for internet service. Within hours of placing an order, the Xfinity Gateway router will arrive at their home. Customers can then set up the equipment themselves using the Xfinity app and activate the service instantly. This eliminates the usual waiting period of several days before internet service becomes available.

For customers in areas where same-day delivery is not yet available, Xfinity offers same-day in-store pickup at any of its 700 stores nationwide.

Eric Jagher, Comcast’s Senior Vice President of Connectivity, said, “In a world where almost everything has become instant, home internet should not be an exception. With Xfinity Same-Day Wi-Fi, customers can access the nation’s fastest and most reliable connection the moment they need it.”

A First in the Industry?

Comcast is positioning this service as the first offering of same-day Wi-Fi connectivity among major wired internet providers. Indeed, no other traditional cable internet company has previously implemented same-day router delivery or pickup to enable immediate activation for new customers.

The company plans to expand this same-day delivery service to all Xfinity-served areas by “early next year.” In the internet service provider (ISP) industry, the shift to same-day delivery for physical router equipment has the potential to significantly transform customer experience.

A Strategy to Bridge the Gap

The fixed broadband market has become increasingly competitive with the rise of fiber-optic and 5G home internet services. Notably, T-Mobile and Verizon’s 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) services have promoted their ability to allow customers to self-install devices and achieve same-day activation. Traditional cable internet providers, which often require two to three days to deliver modems or routers, have struggled to keep pace in this regard.

Xfinity’s same-day delivery initiative is seen as a strategy to eliminate this competitive disadvantage. The availability of in-store pickup at 700 locations is another step to attract customers who prioritize immediacy. Comcast claims that Xfinity offers “the fastest and most reliable connection in the country,” and the company is now leveraging faster activation times as an additional differentiator.

Operational Challenges

Implementing same-day delivery requires advanced inventory management and logistics networks. Xfinity appears to have set up its Gateway routers at regional distribution hubs, enabling them to be shipped within hours of an order. The service also relies on customers being able to set up the equipment themselves and activate it via the app, making ease of setup a critical factor for the program’s success.

The fact that the service is currently limited to 20 markets suggests that the logistics infrastructure is being rolled out in phases. Whether the expansion to all service areas proceeds as planned will depend on the establishment of delivery partner networks and the accuracy of demand forecasting in each market.

Editorial Opinion

The introduction of same-day delivery marks a new phase in the competition to improve customer experiences in the ISP industry. Traditionally, the idea of “waiting for broadband activation” has been a long-standing norm across the sector. By reducing this waiting period to just a few hours, Comcast is not merely improving logistics but is also redefining internet connectivity as an “instant consumption good.” In the short term, this could serve as a key differentiator, particularly against competitors offering fiber-optic or 5G services. It may also push rivals to adopt similar same-day capabilities.

From a long-term perspective, this shift could transform inventory and logistics strategies across the ISP industry. If same-day router delivery becomes a standard feature, it could lower the psychological barrier to switching providers, as shorter wait times make transitioning between services more appealing. Additionally, by providing both in-store pickup and delivery options, Comcast addresses urban, suburban, and rural market needs, though expanding logistics hubs will be critical for nationwide implementation.

One question the editorial team raises is whether this same-day delivery will establish a new evaluation metric for ISPs: “activation quality.” In addition to speed and reliability, could “immediacy of connection” become a deciding factor for consumers? Another point of interest is how this development might influence cable TV and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) providers in other countries, including Japan.
