Amazon has started offering a free software update for its smart home hub “Echo Hub,” released in 2024, starting June 11, 2026. This was reported by The Verge.

This update marks the first major interface overhaul since the device launched. The home screen has been reborn with a fully customizable layout, allowing more smart home information and controls to fit on a single screen. While Alexa Plus AI support had already been added, the new UI further improves usability.

Additionally, support for Ring AI’s Video Search feature is a significant change. Users can now search recorded footage from smart home cameras using natural language, and summaries of camera incidents detected by Alexa Plus can also be displayed.

Background of the Home Screen Revamp

When the Echo Hub launched in 2024, it was designed as a central management screen for smart home devices, but it had limitations in information density and customizability. In particular, users with many devices pointed out that “the amount of information that can be checked at once is too small.”

To address this issue, Amazon fundamentally reworked the UI. The new home screen has changed from a fixed layout to a design where users can freely set and resize sections and tiles.

Five Major New Features

Based on information released by Amazon, here are the new features.

Room-Based Organization

The dashboard can be organized by rooms or functions such as “Bedroom,” “Living Room,” and “Climate.” You can navigate to existing groups from the bottom bar and edit by long-pressing. Adding or removing devices, rearranging them, and batch-controlling all devices in a group can be done with a single tap.

Creating Groups

New groups can be created from the “Add Group” button on the bottom bar. After setting a name and adding devices, they become available from voice control and the app as well.

Setting and Resizing Sections and Tiles

Sections can be added, removed, and rearranged using drag and drop. Frequently used device tiles can be displayed larger, making it more efficient to control lights or air conditioners that are used daily.

Accessing Device Detail Settings

Tapping the ”…” button on each device allows access to detailed controls. For lights, this enables precise dimming from 0 to 100% or color adjustment using a color wheel for compatible bulbs. A power button on each tile allows instant on/off control.

Quick Access to Frequently Used Routines

From the automation section on the home screen, frequently used routines can be accessed with a single tap. Actions like turning off all lights when leaving home or locking doors before bed can be performed in just a few steps.

Integration with Ring AI Features

Notably, this update makes Ring AI’s Video Search feature available from the Echo Hub. This function allows users to search recorded footage from smart home cameras using natural language. Even vague queries like “Did a delivery person come to the front door this afternoon?” can be processed by the AI to identify the relevant footage.

In addition, summaries of camera incidents detected by Alexa Plus can be viewed on the Echo Hub. Users can quickly grasp an overview of important events without having to review all recorded footage, reducing the burden of daily security monitoring.

This Ring AI Video Search feature enables natural language video search and is noteworthy as a practical application of AI agents. In the context of smart homes, the process of interpreting user intent and identifying relevant data sets it apart from traditional keyword searches.

Impact on the Smart Home Hub Market

This update to the Echo Hub will have a certain impact on competition in the smart home hub market. Competitors include Google’s Nest Hub series and Apple’s HomePod (with home features), but Amazon is pursuing a strategy of differentiation through integration with Ring.

Ring is part of the Amazon group, and this move strengthens the connection within the company’s ecosystem. It can be said that Amazon has clarified the Echo Hub’s positioning as a hub for operating security-related devices such as smart locks and sensors.

Editorial Opinion

In the short term, a major benefit is that existing Echo Hub users can enjoy significant functional improvements at no additional cost. This could trigger intensified UI/UX competition among smart home hubs in the latter half of 2026. In particular, natural language video search serves as a clear differentiator against competing products.

From a long-term perspective, Amazon appears to be accelerating the evolution of the Echo Hub from a “mere voice assistant terminal” to a “smart home visualization and management hub.” The integration with Ring AI is part of a vertical integration strategy combining hardware, software, and cloud services. Over a span of one to three years, the fusion of AI-driven video analysis and smart home control will likely advance further. On the other hand, privacy concerns regarding video data being processed by AI on Amazon’s servers remain an issue that users should understand and consider carefully.

As a question from the editorial desk, while the improved customizability is welcome, there is a risk of increased operational complexity. In particular, could this level of freedom become a barrier for users who are not tech-savvy? Additionally, there is no denying the possibility that new privacy concerns may arise in the process of Ring’s video data being utilized for Alexa’s AI processing. The balance between UI evolution and user digital literacy will be key to the widespread adoption of smart homes.
