At its Android Show event, Google unveiled its vision for Android 17 and Gemini Intelligence, signaling a shift from a mere operating system (OS) to an AI-driven intelligent system (IS). This marks the beginning of a long-term plan to create an AI ecosystem spanning the next five to ten years. Google’s direction aligns closely with Apple’s vision for the AI era, presenting an ideal that Apple has aspired to achieve.

Android’s Transformation: AI Intervenes Before User Interaction

While Android has traditionally prioritized “ease of use,” the platform is now entering a new phase. Gemini Intelligence enhances multi-modal capabilities and cross-device integration, allowing AI to proactively assist users even before they initiate actions. For instance, the default keyboard, Gboard, now offers expanded auto-input capabilities. It can recognize and suggest information from multiple sources, such as passwords, certificates stored in galleries, or address details within chats.

Additionally, the voice input feature “Rambler” automatically organizes spoken content, converting it into polished text. It removes filler words like “um” to enable more efficient input. Gemini Intelligence has also improved its ability to handle multi-step tasks; for example, users can take a photo of a travel brochure and instruct the AI to search for similar tours.

Customizable Desktop Widgets and Android 17 Updates

Android 17 introduces a feature allowing users to customize desktop widgets according to their instructions, slated for release later this year. This innovation breaks the limitation of preset widgets, transforming them into gateways for complex tasks. For instance, users can request a widget for a calorie-tracking app that recommends high-protein meals.

On the system side, Google has partnered with Meta to support native camera functions in apps like Facebook and Instagram. Emojis have been updated to a 2.5D style, while compatibility between QuickShare and AirDrop is being expanded to include newer models from Samsung, Pixel, OPPO, Vivo, OnePlus, and Honor.

Googlebook: AI-Powered PC Exclusive to Gemini

Google announced the “Googlebook,” a new category of AI laptops designed specifically to leverage Gemini Intelligence. With this device, users can summon Gemini by simply moving the cursor, enabling seamless AI-driven commands. The Googlebook, developed under Google’s GKI initiative, will support all Android apps and is expected to launch later this year.

Enhanced AI Features for Android Auto

Android Auto is also receiving upgrades powered by Gemini Intelligence, including automated assistance and 3D road displays. A vehicle information memory feature will enable precise responses integrated with vehicle parameters. These updates are scheduled to roll out in vehicles later this year.
