Major Turning Point for Ford’s EV Strategy: Doug Field Steps Down

As the automotive industry accelerates its shift toward electrification, Ford Motor Company is facing further transformation. It has been announced that Doug Field, who has led the company’s EV (electric vehicle) and software division, will step down next month. Field previously directed a secret automotive project known as “Project Titan” at Apple, and later joined Ford to drive its electrification strategy.

Leading the division after his departure will be Alan Clarke, a former Tesla engineer. Clarke has been guiding Ford’s Skunk Works (special project team) based in California, and plans to further accelerate the development of the next-generation platform called the “Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV).”

Field left Apple and joined Ford in 2018. At the time, the company announced large-scale investments in electrification and digital shifts, and Field was expected to be a central figure in this effort. Under his leadership, Ford launched innovative electric vehicles such as the “F-150 Lightning” and “Mustang Mach-E,” garnering attention within the industry. Additionally, in software development, he advanced Ford’s digital transformation by exploring the provision of new services utilizing vehicle data.

New Wind Brought by Alan Clarke

Alan Clarke, chosen as his successor, is known as an engineer with experience at Tesla. At Tesla, he was involved in major projects including the development of the Model Y, and possesses expertise in electric vehicle design and manufacturing. Since transferring to Ford, he has led the company’s advanced development projects based in California.

Clarke’s appointment is considered a crucial move for Ford to further strengthen its technology-focused stance and particularly enhance competitiveness in the EV market. The UEV project he leads develops technology that will become the foundation for Ford’s next-generation electric vehicles, and there is no doubt it holds the key to the company’s future success.
